I am straight. And I give a damn about equality. And it’s because of the people I know who happen to be gay or transgender - they are my friends, they are my family. They have brought the world together through their compassion, through their activism, through their sheer endurance facing a world that constantly turns its back on them. Imagine if you could not hold the hand of the woman or man you love for fear of retribution. Imagine being denied the right to say goodbye to your partner as they lay dying. Imagine being shunned by your faith community and told your prayers will go unanswered. Imagine having no legal right to a child you have nurtured and cared for simply because the majority rule has rendered your relationship non-existent. And then imagine a day, when the hopes and dreams of all people include the dreams of the GLBT community - when we are all recognised equally; under the law, at the alter and the our family dinner table. When we all get to be the people we really want to be. It is time for things to change. We all have to get involved. We all have to give a damn. I give a damn.
